Casteller pillar for Europe Day: European Commission event in Barcelona

On 18 May 2025, 25 castellers took part in the official Europe Day event organised by the European Commission at Pla de la Seu in Barcelona. In front of more than 1,000 attendees and alongside several cultural groups, we raised a pillar topped with the European flag as the symbolic climax of a celebration that linked Catalan culture and European values.

What the European Commission needed for Europe Day

The Europe Day programme involved several cultural groups performing one after another. We had to coordinate on site with the timing of the other participants, the music and the institutional protocol.

The main challenge was to define the performance almost in real time, adapting to the available space, the position of the other groups and the actual time slot we were given without slowing down the event.

How we adapted the castellers performance to an institutional event

We chose a pillar as the ideal format: visually striking, fast and perfectly suited to an event with multiple participants. The European flag revealed by the enxaneta at the top of the pillar became the symbolic climax of the ceremony.

Our ability to adapt allowed us to coordinate logistics directly in the square, defining positions, movement and timing only minutes before the performance while keeping the action visually clear and protocol-friendly.

Outcome and symbolic value of the performance

"Thank you for helping us coordinate the logistics when there were so many moving pieces to manage!"
— Clara, Event Manager, European Commission

The event was a clear success. The blend of Catalan culture and European symbolism created a powerful moment that connected with the audience.

The organisers specifically highlighted the team’s professionalism and flexibility in an event with many moving parts.

This case shows why a castellers pillar is especially effective in institutional events: it concentrates symbolism, order and visual impact into just a few minutes.

  • Short protocol-friendly performance adapted to an institutional event schedule.
  • Clear symbolic message through the pillar and the European flag.
  • On-site coordination solved without a rehearsal in the final setup.

Frequently asked questions about castellers at institutional events

Do castellers work well in institutional or protocol-heavy events?

Yes. A pillar or short castellers performance fits very well into institutional events because it combines visual impact, symbolism and logistics that can be tightly controlled.

How much space and time do you need for a pillar like this?

For a corporate or institutional pillar, a few minutes and a compact performance area are usually enough, as long as the surface is stable and there is enough height clearance.
